Existential Epiphany at the Homecoming Coin Toss
by Travis MacMillan

A
disk
of metal,
             smashing cold rays of sunshine,
flutters through the air…
                                     vacillating in a void,
                          indifferent
             to the outcome
                        and the subsequent chain
             of random events
                        that will unfold
once it grows bored of its aerials.

Chance
            holds sway
                        in a universe
            where Chaos
                        is a jobless house guest,
who has long since overstayed his welcome,
sleeping
           on the couch,
                      watching television the whole day
while drinking the Universe’s beer
and eating his left over Chinese food.
             A tired universe,
                         who proffers no meaning
to an existence
           that haunts
the best of men along with the worst of villains
for the few days that they toil
                                              under an uncaring
                       sun, which has witnessed
the passing of countless other high school
                        football captains,
           whose bodies are now
surfing on coffins through an endless ocean
of cold…
cold,
dirt.
Heads. The home team elects to kicks off as the captain of the team walks off the field with his helmet swaying in his right hand like the pendulum of a grandfather clock that is winding down now that the key that once was used to wind it up has fallen through the cracks of the aged floor boards… never to be retrieved from the dirt below.
